During lockdown 1 I read that there is a condition called “Cotard delusion” where the sufferer is convinced they are dead and cannot be shown otherwise. Usually this would be the strangest thing I’d read over an extended period.
Lockdown has beaten any other period of my life for its strangeness however and the winner hands down was the Tweet I read pleading with people not to drink disinfectant…
When it comes to things like our health and fitness and staying alive there will always be the possibility of a Trump like figure exuding confidence and making a statement which could potentially be taken more seriously than it should be.
Because fitness results/health/staying alive is something people really want and get emotional about, and at times this can cause rational thinking to be a bit lower than it could otherwise be.
Anyway here are some things that are often said about health and fitness that we feel you should make sure your rational mind looks a bit closer at.
1. There is a one size fits all solution: When it comes to getting into shape, there is no one exercise/food/workout/diet/supplement (and so on) that will create results for everyone in the world. Think about it; would you expect an overworked, stressed out, overweight 57 year old to follow a similar program as an 18 year old athlete who lives at home and is hoping to make their County GAA team?
The truth is when it comes to getting into shape, the program you are best to follow depends. On everything from your commitment levels, current fitness, injuries, stress levels, eating habits, sleeping habits etc…
2. Hit this weight and you’ll be happy: I’ve seen weight loss ads with the following line “lose weight with (us) and be happy” or something along those lines. It’s as if all your problems will melt away with the last 2kg of weight that you want to lose.
For us the truth is that being as fit and healthy as you can is a huge component of living a fulfilled, energetic and happy life – the more energy you have and the better you feel, the better you will experience and enjoy life, the more confident you should be and the better you will manage life’s curveballs thrown your way. Just don’t think that if you have circumstances that you don’t like in your life right now, that they will magically disappear along with the lbs.
3. No Pain, No Gain: Or anything along the lines of “Pain is weakness leaving the body”. Yeah, you need to work hard and be consistent with your sessions and at times you will feel tired/DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) etc. But chasing pain and hoping to be sore or trying to be sick when you exercise is not a good idea. Consistently working hard and pushing to the edge/just outside your comfort zone is a far better long term strategy than destroying yourself so you can put a cool black and white photo on Instagram.
4. Personal Trainers change lives: In our opinion, it’s not even a Personal Trainers job to change lives. It’s our job to create an environment you’re comfortable and enjoy training in, provide direction, support and accountability and give you a push along as necessary. Basically it’s our job to provide the space/circumstances for you to change your life. It’s then upto you to make the best use possible of this support.
We could go on here but ultimately what we are saying is make sure you use the phrase “if it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true” if you’re getting any wonder supplements/2 minute a day workouts put in front of you.
It’s not the most exciting thought, but consistency when it comes to your health and fitness will always win out in the end.
Just shoot us a message if you’re looking for a place where you can get direction, support, community and accountability while you work towards building a healthier, fitter lifestyle…
