I was chatting to a client recently who has worked and done well in the financial sector for quite a while now.

So I asked them their secret for success and progress in their chosen profession.

The answer?

“Becoming resilient to boredom. Because not every day is going to be exciting. In fact most won’t be and it’s a case of putting the effort in consistently and doing the same tasks very well time and again.”

According to Ben Greenfield in his book “Boundless”, “routine often trumps novelty.”

Unfortunately for an awful lot of people heading into the new year, they will get trumped by novelty when it comes to their health and fitness.

They end up chasing things like quick fixes, extreme workout plans that they are not able for, overly restrictive diets and getting burned out.

Mostly quitting their regimes by the end of January.

Whereas if they take another route, one which involved realising that not every activity in their fitness journey has to be super exciting and part of a “get shredded in 5 days” program, then ironically they will get more excited about the small tasks.

Tasks that when done consistently will compound over time and give long – term genuinely exciting results. Like:

  • Getting a consistent workout regime in place. One that you enjoy, look forward to and are likely to stick to long-term.
  • Hydrating – drinking enough water will never come across as exciting but is one of the most important things you can do for your health.
  • Sleeping enough.
  • Managing stress as much as possible.
  • Coming up with a nutrition plan that works for you, and building from there. Not going super extreme and immediately to a level you will never be able to maintain.

Ultimately if you can be impatient enough to start your fitness journey asap (right now ideally), while at the same time be patient enough to build it in a way that you’ll stay consistent and let all the healthy habits compound into the results you want, then you’ll really build long term fitness.

If not, 2023 is unlikely to bring the health results you’re looking for…
