Maybe it’s something I’ve gotten from growing up in the country but 2 things I love are:
– Days getting longer. Can’t beat a grand stretch.
– The smell of freshly cut grass, screaming we are flying headlong into the summer season.

Lately the stretch in the evening is starting to hit, but we are probably a bit away from hearing any lawnmower engines purring.

Speaking of lawnmowers, I heard a brilliant term during the week:

“Don’t mow the lawn if the house is on fire.”

Very often when people get excited about working on their health and fitness, they will attempt to mow the lawn while the house is blazing.

Some examples being:
– Not having any sort of a sleep routine in place and looking to take energy supplements.
– Committing to working out 4 – 5 times a week when upto now you’ve struggled to make time for 2 – 3 sessions.
– Deciding to do some sort of a fast a number of days a week when eating vast amounts of highly processed foods and getting plenty of wine on board the rest of the time.
– Wanting to build the likes of a heavy squat without getting your mobility in check first.
– Attempting very challenging interval type training not having a solid base of aerobic capacity in place.
– Doing more core exercises to try and flatten the stomach area when focusing on dropping overall weight would be far more effective.

The list could go but ultimately it really is a case of getting the basics in check and then building out from there.

So if you’re wondering if there is a trick you can do to help you get into great shape this year, start with making sure you:
– Get 2/3 structured resistance workouts in
– Get plenty of movement in throughout your day
– Keep well hydrated
– Sleep
– Make sure your diet consists of as much whole food as possible

Get consistent with the above and you’ll be flying by the time the lawnmowers get going this summer.

Without anything needing to be on fire…
